Organizing Family and Studies

Organizing Family Life

Balancing studies and family begins with good organization. This does not mean planning every day perfectly, but rather setting priorities and making the best possible use of available resources.

Time Management in Everyday Life

Students with family responsibilities benefit from having structured routines. Helpful strategies include:

• Weekly schedules for classes, study times, and family duties
• Shared family appointments in a calendar
• Realistic study goals instead of overloaded to-do lists
• Reserved buffer times for unexpected events
• Using small pockets of time, for example for literature research or exam preparation

Parents often learn to use their available study time particularly efficiently. Instead of long study sessions, several shorter learning periods can be spread throughout the day.

Making Targeted Use of Resources

Managing family life and studies does not have to be done alone. Sources of support may include:

• A partner or spouse
• Grandparents and other relatives
• Friends
• Childcare facilities
• University support services
• Fellow students for study groups or shared notes

Organizing support early reduces stress and creates more predictability in daily student life.

Developing Realistic Expectations

Not every course will be completed with top grades, and not every day will go according to plan. It is important to define personal priorities and recognize that academic progress can also be achieved through smaller, steady steps.

Starting a Family During Your Studies

For many people, the decision to start a family comes during the same phase of life in which they are studying or completing their education. While some prefer to postpone family planning until after entering the workforce, others consciously choose to have a child while studying.

Opportunities of Starting a Family During Studies

Studying can offer greater flexibility than full-time employment. Depending on the degree program, classes, study times, and exams can often be scheduled more individually than in a traditional full-time job.

Additional potential advantages include:

• Flexible scheduling
• Partly location-independent learning
• The possibility of creating an individualized study plan
• Growing into both parental and professional roles simultaneously

Challenges for Both Parents

Starting a family always brings changes to existing life plans.

For Mothers: During pregnancy, childbirth, and the first period after birth, mothers are often more affected by physical and organizational changes. Delays in studies, interruptions, or a temporary reduction in study workload may become necessary.

For Fathers: Fathers are increasingly taking on childcare and parenting responsibilities. They often face the challenge of balancing studies, employment, and family life. Early joint planning and a fair division of responsibilities can help prevent overload.

Financial Planning

Regardless of whether the mother or father is studying, the following questions should be clarified as early as possible:

• How will ongoing expenses be covered?
• What support benefits are available?
• How will childcare be organized?
• Is a reduction in paid employment necessary?

Realistic financial planning creates security for the entire family.

Pregnancy During Studies

Pregnancy changes daily student life, but it certainly does not mean the end of one's studies. Austrian higher education institutions offer various forms of support and counseling for pregnant students.

Early communication with relevant university offices is particularly important, including:

• Program director or academic coordinator
• Student services
• Equality, diversity, or family support services
• The Austrian Students' Union (ÖH) social affairs office
• The GDM-K can also support you

Together, individualized solutions can often be found for classes, examinations, or internships.

Support Options

Depending on their individual situation, students who are pregnant or have children may be eligible for support such as:

• Family allowance
• Student financial aid
• Childcare allowance after birth
• Extensions of certain eligibility and study periods
• Counseling services offered by the ÖH and higher education institutions

For example, pregnancy and child-rearing may extend eligibility periods for family allowance and student aid.

Further information on available support services can be found on österreich.gv.at, profemina and at the  GDM-K der FH OÖ.

Practical Tip: The earlier organizational questions are clarified, the easier it is to avoid interruptions to your studies. Early planning around childbirth and childcare can make continuing your studies significantly easier.
