The Austrian Student Union (ÖH)
The voice of students. Learn about the Students’ Union’s role, its services, and your opportunities to have a say.
What Is the ÖH?
Every student pays the ÖH fee each semester. But what exactly is the Austrian Students' Union (ÖH), and what benefits does it offer in everyday student life? The ÖH is much more than just a mandatory fee on your enrollment statement. It is the legally established representation of all students in Austria and advocates for their interests.
The Austrian Students' Union (ÖH) represents the interests of all students at universities, universities of applied sciences, university colleges of teacher education, and private universities across Austria. Every two years, students elect their representatives, making the ÖH the official voice of students in dealings with higher education institutions and political decision-makers.
The ÖH is organized on three different levels:
- Student Representation (Studienvertretung, StV)
The Student Representation is the first point of contact for program-specific concerns. It represents students within a particular degree program and is familiar with the unique challenges of that field of study. At the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (FH Oberösterreich), each campus and study area has its own representatives.
- University Representation (Hochschulvertretung, HV)
The University Representation advocates for all students at a specific higher education institution. At FH Upper Austria, the ÖH FH OÖ represents student interests in discussions with the university, helps shape campus life, and offers numerous services for students.
- Federal Representation (Bundesvertretung, BV)
The Federal Representation operates at the national level. It advocates for the interests of all students in Austria before government bodies, ministries, and other institutions, working to improve study conditions nationwide.
How Can the ÖH Help Me?
Many students only think about the ÖH when they encounter problems. In reality, it provides support in a wide range of situations, including:
- Questions regarding exams, attendance requirements, or study regulations
- Support in conflicts with lecturers or the university
- Advice on grants, financial aid, and social matters
- Legal counseling
- Assistance in financial emergencies through social funds
- Information about scholarships and funding opportunities
- Organization of events and projects on campus
In short, if you are unsure where to turn during your studies, the ÖH is often the right place to start.

The ÖH Helpline
Studying can sometimes be challenging. Exam stress, tight deadlines, financial worries, or personal difficulties can have a significant impact on your well-being. For such situations, the ÖH offers the ÖH Helpline, a free and confidential support service for students.
Through the Helpline, students can receive professional support for mental health challenges, crisis situations, or simply when they need someone to talk to. The service helps students find initial guidance and connects them with appropriate counseling and support resources.
Especially during stressful phases of university life, it is important to know that you do not have to face your challenges alone. The ÖH Helpline complements the wide range of counseling and support services offered by the ÖH and helps students navigate difficult situations.
Tip: Even if your concern does not seem directly related to your studies, it may still be worth reaching out. The ÖH can help you find the appropriate service or support network.
What Does the ÖH Fee Pay For?
The ÖH fee finances the work of the student representatives and the services they provide. This includes counseling services, social funds, advocacy work, events, and various support programs for students. In addition, the fee includes accident and liability insurance coverage for ÖH members.
Even if many students do not use these services every day, they benefit from having an independent organization that represents their interests both within their institution and at the political level.
How Can I Become Part of the ÖH?
The ÖH thrives on student involvement. At FH Upper Austria, there are many opportunities to get actively involved, including as:
- A member of a Student Representation team
- A representative within an ÖH department or committee
- A student representative or student liaison
- A volunteer at events and projects
- A candidate in ÖH elections
What Are the Benefits of Getting Involved?
Students who actively participate in the ÖH not only help improve university life for themselves and others, but also gain valuable experience:
- The opportunity to shape everyday campus life
- Insights into higher education management and educational policy
- Development of communication and organizational skills
- Experience in teamwork and project management
- Expansion of personal and professional networks beyond one's own degree program
In addition, active involvement gives students the opportunity to make a real impact and represent the interests of their fellow students.
