ECTS und Workload and Credit

Workload

The number of ECTS credits assigned to a course is generally reflected in its workload. Some lecturers assess this workload primarily through exams, as the time spent studying for exams is included in the ECTS calculation. Others use large projects, while some prefer multiple smaller assignments throughout the semester. Regardless of the format, you are expected to complete the required work.

Every student has different strategies for managing their tasks. Some try to finish everything as early as possible, others wait until the deadline approaches. Some find it easy to organize their workload and manage without much stress, while others struggle more with planning and time management. One helpful tool is an ECTS workload calculator, which can help you estimate whether your planned workload is realistic or potentially too demanding. Using such a tool early in the semester can give you a clearer overview of your commitments.

What Is Credit Transfer (Recognition of Prior Learning)?

The term "Anrechnung" (credit transfer or recognition of prior learning) refers to the recognition of previously completed coursework and already acquired knowledge. The decision whether a course can be recognized rests with the respective lecturer or course coordinator.

If you would like a course to be recognized, you should contact the relevant lecturer as early as possible—ideally before the start of a new semester or at the very beginning of it.

You should submit:

• The completed recognition application form
• A transcript or other official proof of your previously completed coursework
• The syllabus of the comparable course you completed previously
• If no syllabus is available, another form of documentation describing the topics covered

Some lecturers may also want to see projects or other academic work you have completed, or they may ask you questions about specific subject areas. Providing whatever additional information they request will generally improve your chances of having the course recognized.

Once your previous achievement has been officially recognized, you can submit the approved form to your program secretary, who can then remove you from the corresponding course.

If your application for recognition is rejected, this can naturally be frustrating. In that case, try to arrange a personal discussion and find out what requirements were not met or what information may be missing. If you feel that you have been treated unfairly, you can contact your class representative or the head of your degree program. However, keep in mind that not every rejection is unfair or made in bad faith; sometimes the previous coursework simply does not sufficiently match the requirements of the course for which recognition is requested.
