Alejandro Lara // Mexico

Hola! My name is Alejandro, currently enrolled in IPM Master’s Degree at Wels Campus. I studied computer science in Mexico and during my bachelor’s degree I had the opportunity to take an exchange semester in Bangkok, Thailand. After my graduation I worked as a software account executive in SAP for 4 years, during my time there I noticed how important “Innovation” for all companies is and I decided to come to Austria to improve my German and get a master’s degree related to Innovation. FH Upper Austria gave me the opportunity to do this and I’m very glad for that. I’m willing to share my experience in topics related to technology, business and innovation.

Financial

Cost of Living
The costs for accommodation vary according to the city in which the school is located. Of course the cost of living depends also very much on your personal life style. In average you must calculate appr. EUR 870 per month.

For example
Accommodation incl. heating & electricity EUR 250 - 450
Food EUR 220
Public transport EUR 20
Study & personal requirements EUR 70
Health insurance ca. EUR 60

Health Insurance

National Health Insurance
Austria has a good public national insurance system with local public providers in all nine federal states. Under certain conditions foreign national insurance carriers cover the costs for medical treatment of acute illness in Austria. Therefore we recommend you to contact your health insurance provider in your home country and enquire about this and if available, procure the necessary forms from them.

If you are a student or visiting researcher from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland and are in possession of valid national health insurance in your home country, you need the European Health Insurance Card. This card is issued by your health insurance provider.

Bachelor's or Master's Degree students as well students of preparation programs who do not fall into the above-mentioned categories may themselves take out a health insurance policy ("Studierendenselbstversicherung") with the relevant Gebietskrankenkasse www.gesundheitskasse.at/.

Self-insured students have to pay an insurance fee of appr. EUR 60 per month at the moment.

Visa

Student visa applications are treated with high priority. It is the students’ obligation to take care of visa arrangements/residence permit. EU/EEA nationals need neither a visa nor a residence title. They, however, have to register with the authority in charge of residence within three months of entering Austria. Nationals of other countries need a residence visa D (for stays of at least 91 days up to a maximum of 6 months). A Residence Permit is required by students who stay longer than six months in Austria. Visa-free entry: we recommend to apply for a residence permit upon arrival in Austria, to save time and money. To find out where to apply for a visa in your home country go to:
