Bioactive Ingredients Research
In this TIMed CENTER Core Facility, we want to establish plant extracts as an alternative to conventional active ingredients.
Phytamines are increasingly being used in modern medicine and nutrition. These are natural extracts and plant substances with measurable biological effects that are used to prevent and treat diseases. The TIMed CENTER Core Facility ‘Active Ingredient Research’ has recognised their potential. The investigations carried out at the Wels campus aim to establish phytamines as an alternative to conventional active ingredients in the future.
In this context, it is necessary to know the basic molecular mechanisms of action and to describe them. To this end, phytamines are not only identified and characterised in this Core Facility, but also analysed with regard to their physiological effects. The latter is carried out in suitable in-vitro and in-vivo test systems. The influence of plant components and their constituents are analysed at various levels, i.e. biophysics, biochemistry and molecular and cell biology.
The spectrum of services ranges from classical basic research to the production of functional foods and the development of highly effective natural pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. Specifically, the researchers focus on topics such as food modification and the investigation of ingredients in cosmetic products. Their work also focuses on researching active ingredients and unknown interactions in the food sector as well as ensuring food quality using various measurement methods.
