Build the Systems Behind the Next Industrial Transformation

Digital transformation in industry needs more than software developers or traditional engineers working separately. Companies increasingly need people who understand engineering systems, data and AI – and know how to bring them together.

DEIA prepares you for technical and interdisciplinary roles in development, engineering, production, automation, digitalisation and innovation.

  • Systems Engineer – Cyber-Physical & Mechatronic Systems: Design and integrate complex systems in which mechanics, electronics, sensors, actuators, software, data and AI interact. You may work on industrial products, machines, production equipment or automated systems and coordinate the interfaces between different engineering disciplines.
  • Industrial AI Specialist / AI Transformation Specialist: Identify where Artificial Intelligence can create real value in industry and turn promising ideas into working applications. Potential fields include production optimisation, quality assurance, predictive maintenance, logistics and process improvement. You will often work between Engineering, IT, Production and Management – translating industrial challenges into data- and AI-based solutions.
  • Digital Twin & Simulation Engineer: Develop and use digital models, simulations and Digital Twins to understand, test and optimise technical systems. Typical applications range from virtual product development and commissioning to the optimisation of machines, production systems and industrial processes.
  • Technical Project Manager – Digitalisation & Innovation: Lead interdisciplinary engineering, digitalisation and AI projects. You combine technical understanding with project management, economic evaluation and organisational implementation and coordinate experts from Engineering, IT, production and management.

DEIA graduates can work across a broad range of technology-oriented industries, including:

  • Manufacturing and production
  • Mechanical and plant engineering
  • Automation and robotics
  • Electronics and semiconductor industries
  • Automotive and mobility
  • Energy and environmental technologies
  • Industrial software and engineering services
  • Research and technology development

The common denominator is clear: wherever physical engineering systems become increasingly connected, digital and intelligent, DEIA competencies are needed.

A Competence Profile in High Demand

The DEIA curriculum was developed in close dialogue with industry – and the demand is clear.

In a survey of 30+ Austrian industrial companies:

  • 97% rated competencies at the intersection of Engineering, Digitalisation and AI as highly or very highly relevant for the coming five years.
  • 84% see a high or very high future demand for graduates with the DEIA competence profile.
  • 81% stated that they could highly or very highly imagine employing graduates with this profile.
  • The programme has also received support from leading industrial companies including voestalpine, Fronius, Semperit, KEBA, TIGER Coatings, Infineon and EBNER.

Study Where Industry Needs You

Upper Austria is characterised by a strong manufacturing and technology sector, with major companies in mechanical and plant engineering, automation, electronics, materials and industrial production.

For DEIA students, this means studying close to companies that are currently implementing exactly the technologies covered in the programme – and that increasingly need professionals who can drive their digital and AI transformation.
