Study focus

Whether digitization, climate change or demographic change: Enormous challenges demand new competencies, so-called future skills, from technicians and industrial engineers. In addition to traditional technical skills, specific technological skills as well as digital and transformative skills are becoming increasingly important (source: McKinsey & Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft e.V.; 2021). This demand is reflected in the AMM curriculum, among other things. In addition to the broad acquisition of competencies in future-oriented mechatronic topics, all students receive essential business administration, management and leadership competencies.

Automotive Mechatronics

Understanding the

  • architectural components (like power electronics, drive train architectures, sensors and actuators) along with their
  • physical properties (like driving dynamics, heat dissipation) and their
  • real world applications (like safety features, driving assistance) are the core competence)

are forming the heart of this part of the AMM story line.

Job Profile: System Engineer

Automotive IT

Mechatronic components need to communicate and share information, the latter being processed, analyzed and the comprehensive results fed back as information in the communication circle. The relevant infrastructure involves µC-architectures, connected via internal and external bus-systems (both wireless and wired), linked via secure communication channels and driven by appropriate operating systems – while real-time versions of the latter need to be used where applicable.

The core of this field within the AMM program provides the students with the necessary knowledge to implement the base infrastructure of smart mobility in that sense.

Job Profile: Automotive Software Engineer, Automotive IT-platform Developer/Architect

Model based engineering

SA pure base Automotive IT infrastructure combined with Automotive Mechatronics misses a link: algorithms!

Those algorithms may be taken from

  • traditional fields of control theory (like state space representation, classic PID controllers), may involve
  • predictive algorithms (Kalman filter, Model Predictive Control), trendy implementations of
  • Artificial Intelligence, or
  • non-standard approaches (like individual and group decision making, scheduling).

Furthermore, for both time and cost efficient implementations, simulating systems and their components is crucial (like FEM, MBS, Monte Carlo Simulation).

This important field of the AMM program spans the bow between the Automotive Mechatronic components and the IT platforms providing the host infrastructure to run them.

Job Profile: Automotive Algorithm Developer, System Engineer

Management & Social Skills

Since the need for interdisciplinary acting of engineers is growing rapidly AMM teaches not only technical skills but also specialist management skills in the areas of innovation, quality, marketing and production management.

As a result, AMM graduates think and act in a highly quality- and customer-oriented manner and can also assess mechatronic development projects in terms of their impact of business management objectives.

The profile is complemented by social skills competences with a focus on intercultural communication, negotiation and moderation regards leadership tasks in an international context.

Job Profile: Project Management in the field of R&D, Requirements Managements, Quality Management
