“Combining technical creativity with a meaningful task” in medical engineering
From Tehran to Linz for a Master's degree
Paria Yasoubi is currently studying for a Master's degree in Medical Engineering in English at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria in Linz. She comes from the Iranian capital Tehran and holds a Bachelor's degree in Bioelectrical Engineering from Hamedan University of Technology. She moved to Austria in September 2024 to continue her education in a practical but research-oriented environment.
What fascinates Yasoubi about medical technology is “the combination of different disciplines such as mechanics, electronics, AI and materials with the aim of improving people's health and quality of life”. Medical technology allows her to “combine technical creativity with a meaningful task.”
Combination of theory and practice speaks for medical engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria
Why did you choose Linz as a place to study? "Of all the possibilities, Austria emerged as a place where I can feel both inspired and at home. I chose the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria primarily because of its combination of theory and practice. I had researched this concept in advance and knew that it would suit my learning style perfectly," says Yasoubi.
Linz as a "second home"
Linz already feels like a "second home" to the Iranian. “Living in Linz and Upper Austria as an international student is an incredible experience,” she enthuses, “the natural beauty of the region is breathtaking, and the city offers a perfect balance between urban life and lots of green spaces.” Yasoubi points out the many challenges that you face as a newcomer - but also that she has always received effective help.
Paria Yasoubi also took the opportunity to work part-time for a few hours a week as a student assistant in a research project at the Department of Medical Technology: "I wanted more than just a source of income; I wanted another bridge between theory and practical application to deepen my understanding of medical technology. So, I approached my professors and was lucky enough to get a position in one of the research groups. This also gives me an insight into the general structure and implementation of projects in applied research and development, which leads to concrete, innovative medical products."

Lizaveta Shchasnovich - Medical Engineering in Barcelona
My name is Liza, and I'm a medical engineer. I was born in Belarus, but I grew up in Spain. After studying the Bachelor's degree in Medical Engineering in Barcelona, I wanted to broaden my knowledge by pursuing a Master's degree, and this opportunity in the FH in Linz has been a unique and great experience for it.
I have had the chance to study under a number of knowledgeable and engaging teachers who have expanded my understanding in numerous fields, such as medical regulations, prosthetics, statistics, or electronics; improving my preparation for the working perspectives and professional world.
I can only recommend this degree program, as taking it is a decision I will always be grateful and proud of because of the development I have experienced through it.

Sara Colecchi - Biomedical Engineering in Ancona
I was born and raised in Italy, and I studied my bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering in Ancona. I have always had an interest for life outside of my country and for different languages, so I try to take every opportunity to travel that I have. The Erasmus program gave me the chance not only to travel, but to actually live in another country.
I chose Austria because this country has a strong emphasis on research and innovation in the field of medical engineering. Here there are several companies that specialize in medical devices which is my specific curriculum.
I chose the FH University because I believe it is a highly competitive international hub for the study of medical devices. Besides the institution offers many practical activities, laboratories of interest and programming experience.

Mohamad Alhasan - Medical Engineer at Kepler Universitätsklinikum Linz
"I chose Medical Engineering program as it combines Medicine with Technology and Science focusing on practical side next to theoretical aspects. One can feel that the colleagues in the class as well as the FH team are like a family, taking care of each other. I had a great time with my colleagues and made new friends. We had lots of fun sharing our experiences together as a team. After I completed my Master’s degree, I got many job offers. It was good feeling for me and immediately I started my new Job at a well-known hospital in Linz, Kepler Universitätsklinikum, as a Medical Engineer and I am glad to work here."

Saanfor Hubert Suh - PhD Student at Institute of Biophysics, JKU Linz
"One of the reasons why I considered studying abroad was to experience a different style of education as well as interact with a different set of people, culture and tradition. After discussions with several people, I chose to further my studies in medical engineering. I was actually enthralled with the courses offered in the master’s level at FH Upper Austria and that was like the centerpiece of what drove me to enroll there. My overall experience was quite positive as I learned and improved on so many aspects within my stay there. These have of course armed me for the future. FH Upper Austria has a nice and welcoming environment. The classes were great and I actually enjoyed them."

Hasan Issa - Medical Equipment Division in Dubai
"It was an honour to join the master’s program at FH Upper Austria. The curriculum was designed in such a way that I could improve my technical and scientific skills, plus to be introduced to the highest standards of regulatory affairs and product management. I chose to attend the programme because of the great curriculum: the elective modules gave me the flexibility to focus on the interesting subjects. The small group of students allowed establishing special connections with colleagues and professors as well as the collaboration between FH and medical companies also provided nice opportunities. After finishing my master program, I started working for a medical equipment division in Dubai, where I could apply the gained knowledge. Studying at FH has been an amazing experience: from the professors that I’ve met, to the friends that I’ve made. I really could not have asked for a better time in Linz."
