Current topics in academic education and applied research took center stage during a visit by Science Minister Eva-Maria Holzleitner to the Wels Campus of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. During the visit, the Minister announced the upcoming Higher Education Strategy 2040, which aims to strengthen institutional profiles and international visibility across universities and universities of applied sciences, and is expected to be presented “by the end of 2026 or early 2027.” She also praised UAS Upper Austria for providing “the best possible education for students and strong momentum for the research departments of innovative companies.”
Minister Holzleitner gained first-hand insights into excellent research and its impact on teaching at the Wels Campus, visiting both the Robo-Area—where robots are being developed not only for industrial use but also for specialized rescue operations—and the laboratories of the food technology programs. Food technology at Wels campus is considered one of the most outstanding flagships of applied research at Austrian higher education institutions.
The Science Minister expressed her hope that the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria will “continue the successful path of the past 30 years—for the benefit of students, for Austrian businesses, and for society as a whole.”
Dialogue between higher education and politics is essential
FH Professor Michael Rabl, President of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, is himself actively involved in shaping the nationwide Higher Education Strategy 2040. “Visits like this one to our Wels campus give the Minister direct insight into our teaching and research—from practice-oriented student projects to cutting-edge applied research. This direct exchange strengthens a shared understanding of the current challenges facing the sector, especially in light of the growing international competition in education, where Austria must clearly position itself.”
Minister Holzleitner echoed this sentiment: “We are currently in the midst of a participatory process to develop the higher education strategy. All stakeholders are being involved as much as possible, because universities and universities of applied sciences know best how the sector is doing and where it should be heading in the future.”
In addition to strategic considerations, budgetary issues were also a key focus. Isolde Perndl, Chief Financial Officer of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, emphasized that public funding for higher education is being put to good use. “Minister Holzleitner was able to see for herself in Wels how efficiently we allocate our resources. We invest in infrastructure to ensure the best possible education for students, in research services for companies, and, of course, in the quality of campus life for both students and staff.”
