Career Profile
Practice and Research
In the exercises from the 1st semester onward, we combine the knowledge from individual courses (programming, biology, statistics). This prepares students well for the study projects starting in the 4th semester, in which tasks from external partners (companies, research institutions, health service providers, etc.) are tackled in small teams. The lecturers are coaches who are on hand to help and advise the students.

Frequently Asked Questions
We have answered the most burning questions about the major for you.
By the way, there are no stupid questions. They are only stupid if they are not asked and therefore remain unanswered - that would be a real shame! If you still have questions, please let us know. We will be happy to answer them. Contact us via e-mail. We have answered general questions about studying and student life in Hagenberg on our FAQ website. It's worth a look!
What distinguishes medical and bioinformatics (MBI) from other degree programs?
MBI is certainly a diverse course that combines IT, data science with medicine and biology. Students choose their specialization at the end of the 2nd semester.
What prior knowledge is required to study MBI?
In principle, none - the courses do not require anything that you do not already have through your university entrance qualification. However, you should be interested in medicine/biology and have an affinity for computers.
How can I tell if MBI is the right degree program for me?
If you want to help people in the field of healthcare or research diseases, have a fundamental interest in biology or medicine and want to have a connection to IT - then this is definitely the right course for you.
How does the admission process work?
Apply online by June 30th at the latest, followed by an invitation to an interview with lecturers from the degree program. Together we will determine whether your interests and expectations and the content of the degree program match and whether this choice is right for you. Within a few days, you will be informed of the admission decision and can immediately take care of accommodation in Hagenberg, etc. Good luck!
Can I get credit for prior knowledge?
Individual courses are credited by the course and degree program management. A lateral entry into the second semester is possible for graduates of an HTL with an IT focus. Whether the course "Fundamentals of Biology and Chemistry" has to be repeated depends on the exact focus of the HTL (e.g. Medical Informatics at HTL Grieskirchen).
Can I spend a semester abroad?
Of course - and we are happy to support this! In addition to the partner universities of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, our professors also have (research) partners in the USA, UK, Spain, Belgium and many other countries. The International Office will be happy to help you find the right university for you and take care of the formalities.
You are also welcome to complete your internship abroad in the 6th semester.
What career opportunities do I have as a graduate of this degree program?
The job opportunities after this degree are very diverse: some of our graduates work in hospitals or healthcare facilities, in research or in the (pharmaceutical) industry. Thanks to the broad education, you can also work as a software engineer or data analyst. It's best to let our graduates speak for themselves!
What is MBI's contribution to research?
Medicine and biology are very research-intensive sciences. This results in constant change and further development that benefits us all. A lot of research is being carried out, particularly in the field of drug research and DNA sequencing, for example for cancer diagnostics/therapy (bioinformatics), as well as image processing and eHealth (medical informatics). Our professors at the University of Applied Sciences lead the two research groups Bioinformatics and AIST.
Can I work a part-time job while studying MBI?
The Bachelor's degree program in Medical and Bioinformatics is a full-time course, usually from Monday to Thursday. Some students find the time to work a part-time job on weekends.
Should I prepare for the program before studying?
All courses are "started from 0". Special preparation is therefore not necessary. However, if you are interested in this field, you are likely to watch the relevant videos or browse through an interesting textbook anyway. But enjoy your summer vacation before you start the next exciting stage of your life at the University of Applied Sciences!
What Master's degree can I pursue after the MBI program?
The Bologna system makes it possible to complete various Master's degree programs in Austria or abroad. The consecutive Master's degree program in Hagenberg is Data Science and Engineering (DSE) with specializations in the field of biomedicine.
What is MBI's contribution to sustainability?
With regard to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the degree program covers a lot of ground with its research groups and graduates. Among other things, we are working on improving medical care through the development of new medicines, among other things (re)organization of hospital processes, detection methods for environmental contaminants, development of energy-saving algorithms cooperation in the sustainable management of the rainforest and discuss (bio)ethical issues during their studies
