Choosing to study Media Technology and Design gave me wings and opened the door to an internship with Red Bull in the United States. Thanks to the proximity to Silicon Valley and collaborations with renowned companies in the digital industry, I gained invaluable insights into the US market.

Practical Experience and Research
From the third semester onward, students work in small teams on real-world projects, supported by experienced faculty. They have access to state-of-the-art studios, professional media equipment, and high-performance computers.
Students also contribute to research through projects and their Bachelor's theses – often in areas such as interactive media, human-computer interaction, and computer games.
The final-semester internship provides valuable professional experience and can be completed in Austria or abroad. Numerous opportunities are available through established partner companies and institutions – for example via the annual FH>>next Careers Fair or the FH Upper Austria Career Zone.

What previous knowledge do I need to start this degree?
To study MTD, you need a general higher education entrance qualification (Matura/Abitur, school-leaving exam, or vocational matriculation exam), a relevant university entrance exam, or completion of our International Foundation Program.
No prior knowledge in programming/technology or design/concept development is required. In the first semester, students are gradually introduced to these areas.
Media Technology & Design (MTD) or Digital Arts (DA.ba): Which program is right for me?
MTD and DA.ba are sister programmes in the media field, the latter is however taught in German. Some content appears in both curricula, and both programmes combine technology and design. The key difference lies in the focus: in DA.ba, design takes centre stage and is complemented by technical subjects, while in MTD the focus is on technology, supported by creative and design-oriented content.
Decide which focus suits you best – when applying, you can list the other programme as your second priority if you can imagine studying either one. This will also be taken into account during the admission interview.
Is it possible to do a semester abroad?
Yes, you can complete a semester abroad in the 4th or 5th semester. The International Office will be happy to help you find the right partner university and take care of the necessary formalities. You are also welcome to complete your compulsory internship abroad.
Is a portfolio required when applying for Media Technology & Design?
Submitting a digital portfolio with your application is optional, but recommended.
How should the portfolio be structured?
The portfolio must not exceed 3 MB. Only certain file formats are accepted (doc, docx, jpg, png, pdf). The design of the portfolio is up to you. You may submit a PDF file containing images and text, optionally with links to interactive or time-based media (videos, etc.), or a PDF file that includes a link to an online portfolio. For group projects such as final school projects, your individual contribution must be clearly indicated.
How many work samples should the portfolio include?
The number of work samples and the design of the portfolio are up to you. We recommend including between 15 and 35 pieces or projects. Sometimes less is more, but make sure your portfolio shows a certain level of diversity. Portfolios that consist of only one type of work (e.g., only photography) are not very informative.
Do I need a laptop, special hardware or specific software?
In principle, a laptop is required for the programme. You will receive all information about the necessary software and hardware at the start of your studies. As a basic requirement, a dedicated graphics card is recommended, as it is needed for performance reasons in areas such as animation and games.
