Human Enhancement and Ethics

Expand human capabilities with modern technologies and build a bridge between engineering, biology, and humanity on the basis of ethical evaluations. The focus is on products that extend human physical abilities for both everyday life and the working world. These include, for example, intelligent exoskeletons as carrying aids or technologies in the areas of AI/Brain-Computer Interfaces/Augmented Reality as the "third hand of humans." Sensors, bionics, and digitalization are key drivers in this process. The students develop an integrated understanding of the technological, biological, ethical, social, and regulatory foundations regarding the question of how specific human actions can—and should—be expanded through technical products.

Work environment

A Human Enhancement Engineer is a specialist who focuses on guiding the development, implementation, and optimization of HEN (Human Enhancement) methods for safe, effective, and widely accepted HEN products/systems. This role requires the ability to understand and apply HEN methods effectively. The main responsibility is to contribute to the development of HEN-based solutions for specific challenges. These solutions may involve customized HEN approaches or the integration of ready-made HEN components into organizational structures. For example: Providers of components, solutions, and services based on HEN technologies: These companies develop and enhance HEN technologies for widespread use in a specific target market. Companies utilizing HEN technologies to improve internal processes, product development, or address skill shortages without selling these technologies externally. Organizations and companies using HEN technologies in the form of ready-to-use or easily configurable HEN components.

It bridges the gap between "development engineer" and "product user" to develop and make new technologies manageable for the living and working environments of people.
