Sustainability Project in Ethiopia: SOL Students Analyze a Hospital’s Energy and Water Supply

The goal of the project was to conduct an energy, water, and environmental impact assessment of the hospital. The data collected will serve as the basis for developing sustainable energy scenarios and for planning a long-term, secure energy supply for a new diagnostic laboratory. At the same time, the students worked on a process model that can also be used in similar sustainability projects in the future.

During their stay, the students conducted extensive technical surveys. These included analyzing the energy and water supply systems, collecting consumption data, and conducting numerous interviews with staff from the technical, administrative, and medical departments. A particular focus was placed on installing several electricity meters, which will enable the collection of key consumption data for future project work.

Our fieldwork provided a vivid illustration of the challenges and opportunities presented by sustainable technical solutions in the healthcare sector. The close collaboration with the hospital staff was particularly valuable; they supported the students with great dedication and provided fascinating insights into their daily work.

In addition to their project work, the students also had the opportunity to learn about Ethiopian culture. The extraordinary hospitality, the many personal encounters, and the stunning natural scenery around Hawassa made the trip a truly special experience.

The project combines technical expertise with international collaboration and demonstrates how students can make a tangible contribution to sustainable development even while they are still in school.
