Open Access Publishing at FH Upper Austria

The University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria collaborates with several publishers, thereby enabling the free publication of articles in numerous open access journals and subscription journals that offer an open access option. If your article was made possible by external funding, please check whether the Article Processing Charges (APCs) will be covered by the funding agency.

ACM

Authors at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria can publish in open access in the Association for Computing Machinery’s (ACM) journals, magazines, and proceedings at no additional cost, thanks to a publishing agreement with ACM.

Requirements:

The “corresponding author” must be affiliated with the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria at the time of “submission” and “acceptance.”

Authors must use their institutional email address during the submission process so that the publisher can identify authors eligible for funding.

The “corresponding author” must list the “University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria” as the affiliation in the article.

The following article types are included in the agreement:

Journal: interview, note, research article, review article, short paper, survey, technical note, tutorial

Magazine: case study, interview, research article, review article

Proceedings: research article, short paper, technical note, tutorial

ACS / American Chemical Society

From July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027, authors affiliated with the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria can publish in open access in the publisher’s hybrid and gold journals free of charge, as part of a publishing agreement with the American Chemical Society (ACS). 
In addition, access to the publisher’s scientific journals is available. 

Requirements:

The submitting corresponding author must be affiliated with the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria at the time of submission and acceptance.
Authors must use their institutional email address during the submission process so that the publisher can identify authors eligible for funding.
The corresponding author must list the “University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria” as the affiliation in the article.
The open access option applies to peer-reviewed articles.

Elsevier

Under the Open Access agreement with Elsevier, authors from the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (FH OÖ) can publish in the publisher’s hybrid journals at no additional cost. The following list includes participating journals. Please note that Elsevier’s list of titles is dynamic; the current version of eligible journals can be accessed via Elsevier’s journal search here.

Please note: Publications in journals with “Gold” Open Access status must be self-funded (e.g., through project funding accounts). For processing in RS2, please feel free to contact the Open Access contact point at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria.

Important for the submission process:

Affiliation selection: University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria

After acceptance (acceptance of the article for publication), select the Open Access option and a Creative Commons license in the Author Dashboard. The publisher will contact the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria library, which will verify that the corresponding author is affiliated with the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. Publications in gold-access journals may be rejected if the quota is not sufficiently covered. In this case, the APCs must be paid by the researchers’ cost centers. 

Emerald

Since 2017, all articles by Austrian authors accepted by Emerald can be published Open Access in the journals on this list - at no additional cost to the institution. The author only has to agree to OA publication with a cc-by license.

Frontiers Open Access Agreement

The University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria has entered into an agreement with the open-access publisher Frontiers
If the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria covers the costs, a 10% discount on the article processing charge applies.

When submitting an article (provided you are the corresponding author), please be sure to specify or select “University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria” as your affiliation. For all authors who wish to submit an article to Frontiers journals, I recommend checking with the relevant R&D department or project manager in advance to confirm whether the costs for the article will be covered!

IEEE Open Access Agreement

The University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria has entered into an open access agreement with IEEE Publishing.  The author must be employed by the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, and “University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria” must be listed as the affiliation. To publish via Open Access under this agreement, the author must be the “primary corresponding author” of the article (the person submitting the article).

International Water Association

On January 1, 2019, the consortium agreement with the International Water Association (IWA) entered into force. This agreement was concluded between the publisher and the eight paying KEMÖ member institutions; however, it also grants access to the publisher’s portfolio for all KEMÖ members and waives the APC fee for affiliated authors from all KEMÖ institutions.

Authors from the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria are exempt from the APC fee under the terms of the agreement. The open access (OA) workflow is as follows:

To submit an article to the IWA, authors must create a personalized account and provide their institutional email address
The affiliation must be specified during the article submission process
Based on these two parameters, the publisher identifies the authors’ affiliation with the respective institution

MDPI Open Access Agreement

The University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria has entered into an agreement with the open-access publisher MDPI, which grants our authors a 30% discount on the article processing charge; the costs are billed centrally. The discount applies to accepted articles by staff members who are the corresponding author or a co-author of the article.

SAGE

The publisher SAGE and the Austrian Library Consortium have signed a new Read&Publish agreement covering the period from 2023 to 2025. Corresponding authors at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (FH OÖ) can publish articles accepted in the hybrid journals of the HSS journal package as open access without having to pay APCs. The following article types are included: Original Research Papers, Review Papers, Brief Communications, Short Reports, and Case Reports.

Springer Verlag : Read and publish

The members of the E-Medien Österreich consortium have agreed to the groundbreaking “Springer Compact” licensing model. This model provides Austrian researchers with access to more than 2,000 subscription journals and enables Austrian authors to publish in open access in subscription journals free of charge.

To publish via Open Access free of charge under this licensing model, the following conditions must be met:

You are affiliated with the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (FH Oberösterreich)
You serve as the “corresponding author”
The journal is listed among Springer Journals
The following article types are supported: Original Paper, Review Paper, Brief Communication, or Continuing Education
Upon acceptance of the article, the “corresponding author” will be asked to identify themselves as affiliated with the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria in the Springer My Publication tool and to consent to Open Access publication under a Creative Commons license (CC-BY). Please use your institutional email address to facilitate verification of your affiliation.
Affiliation with the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria will be verified, the article will be approved, and the publication process at Springer will continue.
 

Taylor & Francis

Authors at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (FH OÖ) can publish their articles accepted by Taylor & Francis as open access publications at no additional cost. The following journals are available for this offer: Taylor & Francis List of Eligible Journals

We recommend that authors at FH OÖ contact the OA contact point at Taylor & Francis regarding open access publications.

Wiley-Journals

The Open Access agreement with Wiley offers authors at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (FH OÖ) the opportunity to publish in the publisher’s hybrid journals via Open Access without additional fees. Please note that Wiley’s list of titles is dynamic and subject to regular changes. The current list of eligible journals can be viewed at Wiley Hybrid Open Access Journals
