HyBRID & HySOLVE – Hydrogen Research Center

Scientists and visionary entrepreneurs – this is your opportunity to shape the future of clean energy.
In the HyBRID project, a comprehensive, state-of-the-art hydrogen research and testing infrastructure has been strategically designed and built at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria at the Campus in Wels. Based on the specific needs of Upper Austria’s industry, the existing expertise at the university, and forward-looking strategic priorities, the Hydrogen Research Center focuses on four key research areas that closely align with the national hydrogen strategy:

   - Thermal utilization of hydrogen in high-temperature industrial processes

   - Interaction of hydrogen with materials and components – understanding behavior, durability, and safety

   - Hydrogen in integrated electricity grids – sector coupling, storage, and grid stability

   - Process engineering applications of hydrogen – advanced chemical and industrial uses

The follow-up project HySOLVE takes this foundation further by establishing a powerful platform for both pioneering basic research and application-oriented development in Upper Austria. Our mission is to unlock the efficient, safe, and large-scale deployment of climate-neutral (green) hydrogen – accelerating the sustainable transformation of industry and society toward true carbon neutrality and to include a wide variety of stakeholders along developing supply chains. We are closely cooperating with other national and international research organizations and active member of WIVA P&G.

Core Research Question (HyBRID & HySOLVE)

What are the fundamental physical and chemical and systemic principles required to deploy hydrogen efficiently for the energy transition and the decarbonization of industry – and how can we master these challenges?
This central question drives the entire research effort. Using innovative facilities, multidisciplinary expertise, and dedicated resources, we are generating breakthrough knowledge, published in leading scientific journals and presented at international conferences. The scientific community in Austria and beyond directly benefit from these openly accessible results.
Beyond academia, we actively promote broad acceptance and real-world adoption of hydrogen technologies across multiple industries. Through high-level conferences, specialized workshops, and industry forums, we transfer knowledge, spark collaboration, and connect researchers, innovators, and forward-thinking companies. These platforms are designed to exchange cutting-edge ideas, share best practices, and turn scientific discoveries into scalable industrial solutions that support local value creation.

Cooperation Requested
Whether you are a researcher pushing the boundaries of science or an innovative entrepreneur ready to build the hydrogen economy of tomorrow – the Hydrogen Research Center at Campus Wels offers the infrastructure, expertise, and ecosystem to make ambitious ideas reality.
