Future‑Ready Studies: FH Upper Austria Master’s in Embedded Systems Design in Hagenberg
New curriculum with a focus on Embedded AI, project‑based learning, and individualized specialization.
The Embedded Systems Design master’s program at the Hagenberg campus of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (FH Upper Austria) will launch a fully revised curriculum starting in October 2026. This redesign reflects current technological developments as well as the growing demands of industry – and offers students expanded opportunities for individual specialization.
The Embedded Systems Design (ESD) master’s program prepares students to develop intelligent, connected embedded systems at the intersection of hardware and software. Key future‑driven topics such as Embedded ArtificialIntelligenceand Security have been newly integrated into the curriculum. At the same time, the range of electives has been significantly expanded: students can tailor their personal study path – from a deeply technical focus with strong specialization to a blend of engineeringand management skills.
At the core of the program is the Embedded Computing specialization, which—together with the key areas Advanced Software, Embedded AI & Security, Chip Design, Signals and Systems, as well as Management and Society—forms the program’s academic foundation.
The curriculum is enhanced by freely selectable study projects in the first and second semesters, giving students the chance to explore individual interests and work on practice‑oriented challenges.
“A central didactic element of the program is project‑based learning. In six courses, students build expertise through project‑oriented formats and real‑world tasks. This creates a strong link between theory and practice and supports both systems thinking and the ability to independently solve complex problems,” says Program Director Dr. Thomas Müller-Wipperfürth.
The master’s program is intentionally designed to accommodate working students. One fixed lecture‑free day per week makes it easier to combine studies with professional employment—a model that benefits both students and companies.
With its new curriculum, the Embedded Systems Design master’s program positions itself as a forward‑looking education at the intersection of high‑tech innovation and industrial practice.
Applications for the Embedded Systems Design master’s program are now open.
