The global movement of goods is a key factor in shaping a more climate-friendly future for transportation. At the same time, raising public awareness of sustainable logistics is becoming increasingly important. The educational platform REWWay supports teachers, educational institutions, and anyone interested in communicating topics such as sustainable freight transport, multimodal logistics, and inland waterway shipping in a practical and easy-to-understand way.
The platform’s content is designed for a wide range of age groups and educational levels and is available free of charge. REWWay, which stands for Research & Education in Inland Waterway Logistics, has now been relaunched with a new design and expanded content.
The REWWay platform emerged from a long-standing collaboration between the Logistikum at the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences and viadonau, Austria’s waterway management company. The initiative aims to strengthen knowledge and awareness of sustainable transport solutions while inspiring young people in particular to engage with the challenges and opportunities of climate-friendly logistics.
Inland Waterway Transport Helps Reduce CO₂ Emissions Against the backdrop of growing transport demand and the need to reduce emissions in the transportation sector, alternative modes of transport such as rail and inland waterways are becoming increasingly important. REWWay illustrates how a successful modal shift toward more sustainable freight transport can be achieved and why it must be accompanied by a broader mental shift in society to ensure the long-term adoption of sustainable mobility and logistics solutions.
Another key focus of the platform is environmental protection, as well as the role of the Danube River as a living environment, natural habitat, and economic corridor.
Targeted Search for Teaching Materials by Grade Level or Format The redesigned platform offers a wide range of educational resources tailored to different age groups and learning environments. The practical, application-oriented materials can be used across all educational levels, from elementary school and secondary education to higher education and continuing professional development.
A new teaching-resource filter allows educators to search specifically by grade level, subject area, and content format. The materials provide valuable connections to subjects such as geography and economics, education for sustainable development (ESD), digital literacy, career orientation, as well as project-based and language learning.
Available resources include PowerPoint presentations with background information, interactive videos, Kahoot! quizzes, group activities, case studies, and other ready-to-use classroom formats that can be integrated directly into lessons.
All materials are available in both German and English, can be customized to meet individual teaching needs, and can be integrated directly into classroom instruction.
“Transport School Labs” Offer an Interactive Introduction to Sustainable Logistics The platform’s educational offering is complemented by the Transport School Labs, where students explore sustainable transport and logistics solutions through hands-on, interactive learning experiences. During these workshops, participants work on real-world challenges, develop their own ideas, and gain first-hand insights into the logistics systems of the future.
Sustainable logistics requires not only innovative technologies but also knowledge and awareness. With REWWay, we aim to provide educators and educational institutions with modern tools that help them communicate these topics in a clear, engaging, and practice-oriented way," says FH-Prof. Dr. Lisa Maria Putz-Egger, project lead at the Logistikum of the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences in Steyr.
