Only Great Product Managers know...
One of the courses that students take in the IPM program is Mechanics of Materials. At first glance, it may seem just like a basic lesson, but in practice it can be the source of many ideas. During this semester, students spend most of this course with Professor Zehetner.
Explanation of the important principles of statics and mechanics of materials as well as many related problems were taught by Prof. Zehetner. It was a pleasure for me to deepen the content by presenting more industrial problems.
We learned how to calculate forces and Moments (torque) in simple industrial devices and gained an understanding of the significant effect of center of mass on static situation and friction force applications in various industries. For instance, we learned the importance role of forces equilibrium on cranes like @Liebherr’s products (pic. 2, 3); we were even surprised to see how @Schaeffler used the asymmetric feature on spherical roller bearing and introduced a new product to increase the performance and reliability of wind turbines (pic. 4).
On the other hand, we analyzed sometimes fundamental definitions and if the solutions were not theoretically convincing, we reached more realistic ways by conducting experiments (pic. 5) because some students always had a lot of questions even at the beginning of the class, questions which of course were caused by the great desire to learn this fascinating course.
