Research team Biosciences

Research performed at the Biosciences Research Group focuses on diverse biotechnological projects dealing from the reutilization of industry-derived waste products for synthesis of highly social-demanding compounds (antibiotics, antioxidants, pigments and nutritional additives), to the search of novel extremophile microorganisms with the ability to produce industry relevant products. For this aim, genetic engineering and growth/fermentation optimization approaches of diverse microorganisms (yeast, bacteria and cyanobacteria) are used. Additionally, new analytical methods for the identification and characterization of novel compounds are developed on a routine basis, both for the Biosciences Group-associated research projects and external collaborators (Industry and Academia).

Laboratory infrastructure includes analytical equipment (HPLC with diverse detectors, GC/MS, ICP-OES) and molecular and cell biology devices(including qPCR-, PCR-thermocyclers, in house DNA sequencer and various fluorescence microscopes). Additionally, microorganisms growth is achieved on optimized bioreactors/fermentors systems and pre-treatment of biomasses is performed in an in-house steam-explosion plant facility.

The Bioscience R&D group possesses solid relationships with national and international scientific collaborators from academic institutions to industrial partners.

Students are always welcomed to apply for internships, bachelor- and master- theses. A list of the actual open positions can be seen here (link to open positions). If there are no open positions at the moment, students and researchers are highly encouraged to contact us directly via email.
