Logistikum and Post AG celebrate 10 years of research cooperation
The Logistics Center of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria at Campus Steyr and Austrian Post have been researching sustainableand visionary topics for a decade and have significantly shaped the logistics landscape through pioneering initiatives.
The joint projects of the past ten years have already won numerous prestigious awards for their future-oriented development and commitment to sustainability, including the State Prize for Packaging, the Green Marketing Award and the VCÖ Mobility Award. This makes Austrian Post and the FH OÖ Logistikum on the Steyr campus one of the drivers of innovation in logistics.
"The cooperation with Austrian Post is an outstanding example of sustainability. Very specific solutions are being researched and implemented on the basis of long-term cooperation and visions. The sustainability goal needs a path, and we are following it," says Franz Staberhofer, Head of Logistikum and Head of the Supply Chain Management degree program.
"For ten years, we have been relying on the research expertise of the Logistikum to develop progressive logistics trends. Our numerous awards prove that we have already achieved great success here. The Logistikum is a strong partner that will continue to play a leading role in driving forward innovations in logistics in the country,"
says Peter Umundum, Director of Parcel & Logistics, Österreichische Post AG.
Lighthouse projects
Project "Food4all@home" (2013-2015), Austrian Post and Logistikum were pioneers in online grocery retail in Austria - long before the Covid 19 pandemic highlighted the importance of this sector worldwide. Together with Unimarkt, they were the first in Austria to test home delivery of groceries. In order to combat traffic congestion, overcrowded streets and emissions, the "City Hub Vienna" pilot project (2019) tested new ways of urban parcel delivery, for example with alternative forms of delivery such as walking and cycling tours. Austrian Post and Logistikum tested delivery using e-cargo bikes via centrally located city hubs, i.e. central locations that organize the collection and delivery of parcels. Reusable packaging for online retail was developed for "Post Loop" between 2020 and 2022.Together with five retail companies, the use of reusable packaging for e-commerce was tested with the aim of determining the economic and ecological feasibility of reusable packaging. Based on this research, Swiss Post has been offering the Post Loop product since July 2023 - a standard service for reusable packaging that enables online retailers to offer an environmentally friendly packaging alternative. This Austrian Post service recently won the prestigious BVL Sustainability Award from the Austrian Logistics Association.
