Expanded Summer School 2026
The Expanded Summer School offers a unique, intensive learning experience from September 8 to 13, 2026 at our Faculty of Informatics, Communications and Media in Hagenberg and Linz.
The program takes place in conjunction with the renowned Expanded Conference (https://expanded-conf.org/) as part of the internationally recognized Ars Electronica Festival in Austria and offers a special platform for emerging female scientists and practitioners. The summer school begins with a workshop in Hagenberg before moving to Linz for the activities of the Expanded Conference and the Ars Electronica Festival. This structure is intended to enable both targeted skills development and a broad insight into the latest developments in digital and interactive art.
The central theme of the Expanded Summer School 2026 is 'Play to Research.' This focus brings an understanding of games to the forefront that goes far beyond entertainment and mere gameplay: games are exciting objects of research, powerful experimental environments, and methodological tools at the same time. They allow complex questions of human-computer interaction (HCI), behavior, emotion, and design to be explored under controlled yet lively conditions. The Summer School approaches this theme by highlighting connections between game development and scientific research – from using games as research instruments to prototyping new forms of interaction, to reflecting on what games can reveal about us as humans, society, and culture.
With a keynote by Katherine Isbister (Professor of Computational Media, UC Santa Cruz), a game research panel, and a practice-oriented game development mentoring with experts from the domestic games industry, the program offers a unique combination of academic depth and applied experience. Katherine Isbister has been conducting research for many years at the intersection of HCI and game design and exemplifies the motto of this year's Summer School with her 'Research through Design' approach.
In addition to the academic program, the participants can explore the rich cultural landscape of Upper Austria, meet international colleagues and experts, sketch new ideas, and significantly expand their professional network. Upon successful completion of the Summer School, 3 ECTS credits are awarded, so that in addition to the practical benefits and networking, there is also an academic benefit.
Main focus: Play to Research
Workshop organisers
The Expanded Summer School is organised and led by four researchers and educators with complementary expertise in game design, HCI and game analysis.
Michael Lankes (University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, Hagenberg Campus)
Michael Lankes is a professor at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, Hagenberg Campus, specialising in game art, game design and interaction design. His research focuses on playful interactive environments, the analysis of player behaviour (including gaze interaction), level design and the evaluation of user experience factors in games. He is actively involved in the Hagenberg degree programmes in Digital Art and Media Technology and teaches students the basics of game development and production. In his work, he often collaborates with partners from media psychology and usability, focusing on interactive environments and the perception of characters.
Katherine Isbister (University of California, Santa Cruz)
Katherine Isbister is a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she directs the Social Emotional Technology Lab, specialising in Human-Computer Interaction and Games. Her research focuses on how design choices impact emotion and social connection in digital and playful computer-supported experiences. She is the author of several influential books, including How Games Move Us, and was recognized by MIT Technology Review as one of the TR100 Young Innovators. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with international research labs and major industry partners such as Microsoft, Google, and Electronic Arts.
Simone Kriglstein (Masaryk University, Brno; Austrian Institute of Technology)
Simone Kriglstein is a professor at the Department of Visual Computing at Masaryk University, the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the University of Vienna. Her expertise lies in the field of HCI, particularly in the design and evaluation of user interfaces and interaction methods in various areas, with a strong focus on games. Her research encompasses game user research, game data visualisation, serious games, gamification, player and spectator experience, and educational technologies. She has published numerous papers at leading HCI and gaming conferences and in specialist journals.
Günter Wallner (Johannes Kepler University Linz)
Günter Wallner is Professor of Game Computing at the Institute for Computer Graphics at Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz and has also worked at Eindhoven University of Technology and Ontario Tech University. His research focuses on games user research and game analytics, in particular the development of methods for analysing and visualising large amounts of data on player behaviour in order to improve games and the gaming experience. His expertise includes information visualisation, player modelling, spatio-temporal data analysis in games, and the assessment of player needs for post-game analysis.
